This is the second part of my Kuroshitsuji fan fiction tutorial! This time, I am focusing largely on alternate universe fan fiction. However, even if you are not an alternate universe fan fiction author you will find this tutorial useful. I hope you enjoy it!

Looking for part one? You can find it over here: [link]

Yes, this tutorial is longer than the original. This particular tutorial is more than thirty thousand words long.

Here is what I cover:

What is an alternate universe?
What makes a good alternate universe?
Preconceptions
Open and Closed Universes
Kuroshitsuji and Alternate Universes
Deciding on a New Reality
Creating the Rules
Adapting Characters
Pairings in Alternate Universes
Building Plots

Much like the original tutorial, this tutorial will occasionally be updated as the manga continues. Please add me to your watch list to be alerted when this tutorial is updated!

I think that this is a really really great guide. You have just done a great service for fanfic authors.

If I may ask, since your not a fan of AUs do you ever read them or have seen a good ones?

I am a fan of all type of well written fanfics. I can see what you mean about keeping true to the series and about people wanting to read fanfics about the canons. I think AUs are also good & can be refreshing to write and I can say I don't think its an insult to the writer of the series as long as they are well written and respect the canon. Like the new black butler movie is a big AU with a new master & time period and Yana Toboso approved it ( said it was her dream to have a Kuro film) so I don't think it will be an insult to her or her work to see AUs.

I really think it would be nice if you got a DD for your guides they are great and everyone should see them. I really love how detailed they are and how you encompass every aspect of writing a fanfic. Thank you for your time.

I actually have to say that I am no longer in the Kuroshitsuji fandom. So, when you ask if I've ever seen a good AU, I can say that I have - but never for that fandom. My current fandom, however, has a couple of fics that are downright impressive in the way of AU. My fiancee is the author of a particularly poignant AU piece that I recommend to people very frequently. However, my current fandom is vastly different from Kuroshitsuji, and thus has to be judged on different merits.

Thanks for your support on my guides. I have more that I intend to publish in a couple of months for other writing-related things. I do hope you'll keep an eye out for them.

I see and if I may ask, did you grow out of it?
 I like the show ( season 1) and the manga but I am not sure if I want to get into the fandom to much. I have read one decent AU from that fandom but it was never posted online. I can see what you mean about not really finding good ones in that fandom because I tend to find the same type of stories. I understand different fandoms so different merit.

Your welcome and I will be keeping a watch out for your great work :)

I love Kuroshitsuji, but the fandom (when I was involved) was incredibly icky. The people were very petty and bitchy, very clique-y. I got tired of all the drama. And I found a new, much more enjoyable fandom that I have greatly enjoyed participating in. Kuro was just way too political. That and I got some severely creepy fands in the Kuro fandom.

I understand completely and it seems like it has gotten worst. Kuro has become more popular and I am not sure if that is the reason why but the fandom is starting to get a bad reputation ( forums online are even starting to write about it). I have had similar experiences with the bitchy and cliquey thing, and also I have been seeing quite a few fans act like they know better than Yana Toboso, when it's her story. But what is your new fandom it sounds pleasant?

Well, I love Yana Toboso, but right before I left the fandom, she did some stuff that I can't really get behind either. For lack of a better explanation, it's like she started to become her own fangirl. It just didn't feel right, and I felt like she had lost her original fervor for her story. She also started slipping things in that felt like she was flipping the bird at her editor. And, frankly, when the author starts acting as childish as the fandom, it's a problem.

I am part of the UKISS fandom. They're a Korean band. Don't throw tomatoes at me. Trust me, I had that reaction, too. The fandom, however, is really great. And the band is... like something out of yaoi manga, seriously. If you get curious, I typed up an intro to them, over here.

I was never really a part of the fandom so I really wonder what she was doing? Because you are not the first that I saw who has said that she kind of became her own fangirl. A while back someone had posted a journal on DA of why they stopped doing Kuro fanart and it was something similar, like Yana was becoming like fangirl & it was starting to show through the story and the fandom was becoming more aggressive etc.

lol :D don't worry no tomatoes. I'm not really into yaoi but a nice band with a nice fandom is worth checking out so thanks :)

Yana did a whole crapload of shit. One of the things that I think helped finish off my taste for it was her bringing anime-only characters into the manga. You could tell that they weren't supposed to be in the manga in the first place, and the cameos tended to be awkward. But she always seemed so damn happy about it. Personally, I find that a little grating. She also began taking too many shots at her editors, and went over-the-top with the boys love content in the manga itself. I mean, yeah, we all kind of ship Seb/Ciel, but she literally... shipped... them... with the cruise ship arc. Subtle, Yana. Very subtle.

UKISS has great music and a fantastic fandom. And the guys themselves are hilarious.

I appreciate that you took the time to write such an exhaustive tutorial. I am impressed by that alone. 0.o But I think I might go read some of your fanfiction, now.
Also, do you beta fanfiction? I've been mentally debating whether or not to ask for a beta, and while you seem like you would be rather ruthless, I would be very honored if you wouldn't mind looking at some of my work. If it's too much time, of course I understand. I actually deal a lot with alternate universes, now that I think about it. But, usually they're closed universes.

Why, hello again- I believe I commented on part one, about Sebastian's eye color. =w=b (I've decided to go with mahogany on that, generally. Still think they're rather reddish though.)
Yet again, excellent work on this part- I've been intending to write a modern day AU for Kuroshitsuji, in fact.
A question; what's your opinion on changing the ages of the characters? Namely, having Ciel at 16 and Sebastian at about 20. The purpose of this in my particular story is to put Ciel over- or, at least, AT- the age of consent, for the sake of less creepy factor- as well as having Sebastian be a bit younger than he is usually portrayed, for the same reason. (And yes, where I live, 16 is the age of consent.)
Would you consider changing ages something that could be used for AU, if other aspects of the characters' personalities are kept intact?

Honestly, ages are up to the author. If I were writing it, I'd actually make Sebastian older. I tend to think of him as being mid- to late-twenties, and the age difference is a nice contrast with the pairing. Putting Ciel at sixteen is believable, but your readers may have a hard time remembering it. It's all up to you as to what you want to write. After all, this is an alternate universe story.

I'm in the middle of reading, but I guess I'll just have to finish it tomorrow. I have to get up early after all.
Say, if I ever wanted to write them in a universe I know first hand, would that be wrong? would that be okay? I'm not used to writing AUs, but I just had to ask. (Not that I'll post any AU yet. They are not really my thing)

i can come up with an explanation for why sebastian would be in a clown costume!
Lizzy is ciels really good frend, and she wants a clown at her birthday party. She just said this hours before and their was noway for them to hire a clown... untill sebastian wants to make ciel happy... because lizzy was crying ans all depersed and making ciel upset and giving them both a headache.. so sebast dressed as a clown, making lizzy happy and giving ciel something to tease sebastian about. >:D

I really enjoyed reading both your tutorials. They're very well thought out. I also want to thank you for that comment about writing HS fic. If there's one thing I won't read it's that, no matter how well written it is. I also loved your point about the "creepiness" factor, since I don't write Seb/Ciel, I never gave it much thought, but you're definitely right about it.

I hope you'll write more of these in the future! :D

Really?

*nods* And even if you can write it in a way that minimizes the creepiness... it's still illegal in the modern era. ^^; Unless one's aim is to highlight that creeepiness and the consequences of such a relationship, because sadly, it does happen in real life, it's best as you say to not go there, ever.

It was illegal in the time period of the series, too, but Ciel's maturity really helps to offset it. Personally, I love the pairing but people really have to work hard to write it well.

*nods* But in the series, it's not written that way, so there's no creep-factor. (At least for me there isn't. :XD:) I'm more of a Soma & Agni fan and tend to write mostly them, so no worries about a creepiness factor there. ;p

Why spend so much time on a tutorial for fan fiction o.o?

I mean, not knocking it since I've written fan fiction before xD;

But I just figured that if you're going to put so much effort into teaching people something it would be... well... original stuff. I believe I read the first tutorial and if I remember there were some good tips that would be much better suited for just general writing help ^^

I'm just curious is all.

There are thousands of books on the subject of writing original fiction. If you want one, your local library or book store will help you out. Being able to write original fiction is an absolute must for fan writers. However, your average fan writer doesn't think that. They don't care about writing original stories, they just want to write fan fiction.

I write fan fiction tutorials because there are no resources out there for fan authors. I do put in a lot of things that work just as well for original fiction authors, because everything that makes original fiction good should also make fan fiction good. I am hoping that my tutorials can teach people how to be better authors. Not just for fan fiction but for original fiction, as well.

Hm I guess that makes sense. Feeding them good writing habits under the umbrella of fan fiction xD;

I agree with you to be honest, in order to write anything you need to be capable of understanding how to write in general. I guess I just thought it might be... I dunno, alienating more potential 'students' by specifying what it was for ^^;

Ah well, I see your point and don't dispute it ^^ thanks for answering.
